The Nigerian government has called on the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to implement democratic reforms within its Governing Body to ensure fair representation of diverse social and geographical interests across all continents.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, made the appeal while receiving the ILO Director-General, Gilbert F. Houngbo, during his visit to Nigeria at the invitation of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA).

Dingyadi described Houngbo’s visit as a testament to the strong relationship between Nigeria and the ILO.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the organisation, particularly in advancing social protection, enhancing workplace safety, and promoting gender equality.

The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s consistent adherence to ILO principles, having ratified 44 conventions, including those focused on eliminating forced labour, abolishing child labour, and eradicating workplace discrimination.

He also emphasized the historical significance of Houngbo’s leadership as the first African to head the ILO, calling it a milestone in global labour representation.

Dingyadi expressed confidence that the Director-General’s engagement with Nigerian stakeholders would yield meaningful outcomes in tackling youth unemployment, developing skills, and integrating the informal sector.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment that promotes decent work and economic growth.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, also emphasized Nigeria’s focus on employment, skills training, and workers’ rights in line with international obligations.

In response, Houngbo commended Nigeria’s efforts in promoting social justice and labour rights.

He reaffirmed the ILO’s support for member states that align with its core principles and expressed confidence in Nigeria’s continued commitment to fair labour practices.
