Nigeria calls for global financial reform at UN High-Level Meeting

The Federal Government of Nigeria has renewed its call for urgent reforms to the global financial system, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive and development-focused international financial architecture.

Speaking at the 2025 United Nations Special High-Level Meeting with the Bretton Woods Institutions, World Trade Organization (WTO), and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Nigeria’s Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, laid out the country’s priorities. The meeting was held at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Dr. Uzoka-Anite advocated for the reallocation of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) to vulnerable economies and the establishment of UN-led mechanisms for sovereign debt restructuring.

She also emphasized the importance of shifting away from austerity-driven policies towards a financial system that prioritizes sustainable development.

“A fairer international financial architecture is essential for reducing inequality and achieving lasting development.

“Developing economies that are implementing ambitious reforms need tailored support and concessional financing to make meaningful progress,” she stated.

The Minister further asserted that Nigeria’s participation in the high-level discussions is a pointer to its commitment to bridging the global financing gap and pushing for reforms that support equitable growth and prosperity across nations.
