Nigeria condemns Guinea-Bissau coup, demands protection for election observers

By Kunle Sanni –

The federal government has condemned the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, describing the development as a grave breach of democratic order and a direct threat to regional stability.

In a statement released Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria expressed “profound dismay and deep concern” over the unconstitutional takeover, calling the military action a “blatant violation” of ECOWAS protocols that reject any ascension to power through unlawful means.

The government warned that the military insurrection undermines not only Guinea-Bissau’s democratic progress but also the stability of the entire West African sub-region.

Nigeria urged the junta to immediately and unconditionally restore constitutional governance, ensure the safety of detained individuals, and respect the sanctity of democratic institutions in the country.

The statement also highlighted the presence of international election observers in Guinea-Bissau and called on the military authorities to guarantee their safety. This follows growing concerns for officials and observers caught in the crisis after the suspension of the electoral process and the closure of national borders.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria unequivocally calls on the authorities in Guinea-Bissau to ensure and guarantee the safety of all election observers still in the country on official assignment,” the statement said.

The government further urged all parties to exercise utmost restraint, embrace peaceful dialogue, and respect the will of the people expressed through the ballot box, emphasizing that the election must be concluded peacefully with results announced by the appropriate electoral body.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan had travelled to the West African nation as part of a joint African Union, ECOWAS and West African Elders Forum delegation monitoring last weekend’s presidential election when the takeover occurred.

“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the promotion of democracy, peace, and stability across the African continent,” the Ministry stated.
