Nigeria Customs investigates bribery allegation at Lagos airport

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched a full-scale investigation into an alleged misconduct by one of its officers at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.
A video that went viral on social media showed the officer soliciting a ₦5000 bribe from a passenger, sparking widespread public outrage.
According to the NCS, the preliminary investigation pinpointed the incident to the New Terminal within the departure hall of the airport. The footage captured by the passenger clearly shows the officer requesting ₦5000 in return for speeding up the customs process.
“The behavior exhibited in the video is not only unacceptable but also tarnishes the image of the service,” Abdullahi Maiwada, National Public Relations Officer for the Comptroller General of Customs said in a statement.
“We are taking this matter very seriously and are committed to ensuring that justice is served.
“This unprofessional conduct is in stark contrast to the core values of our service.
“We are dedicated to maintaining a transparent and accountable customs operation.”
The NCS has called on the public to assist by reporting any similar incidents of misconduct or corruption.
“These reports are crucial in upholding the integrity of our service and ensuring that officers adhere to the highest ethical standards,” Maiwada added.
