Nigeria declares bid for UN human rights council seat for 2027–2029 term

Nigeria has formally declared its candidacy for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2027–2029 term, pledging stronger cooperation with international human rights mechanisms and reforms to boost accountability and civilian protection.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, announced the bid in a video statement on Tuesday, describing the council as a vital global platform for dialogue, prevention and cooperation on human rights issues.

Tuggar said Nigeria would fully cooperate with the council’s procedures and mechanisms if elected, reaffirming the country’s commitment to promoting and protecting fundamental rights at home and abroad.

As part of its human rights agenda, the minister highlighted plans to finance safe schools and invest in secure learning environments to safeguard children amid prevailing security challenges. He added that the government was strengthening accountability through ongoing reforms and enhanced regional and international partnerships.

According to him, efforts are underway to ensure that international human rights and humanitarian standards are integrated into internal security operations, with a primary focus on protecting civilians.

Tuggar also stressed Nigeria’s commitment to freedom of religion and belief, saying peaceful coexistence among faith communities remains central to national unity. He said the government was determined to build a society where all citizens, regardless of ethnicity or creed, are protected under the rule of law.

Beyond civil and political rights, the minister pointed to economic reforms, social investment programmes and growth in the digital economy as key pillars for creating conditions that support human rights and development.

He further linked environmental protection to human rights, noting that Nigeria’s climate adaptation strategies are anchored on sustainable development and safeguarding future generations.
