Nigeria’s dream of featuring in the FIFA World Cup suffered another blow as the Super Eagles were eliminated by the Democratic Republic of Congo in a dramatic qualifier play-off on Sunday night.
The Eagles’ hopes were dashed in a penalty shootout after the game ended 1-1 following regulation and extra time. DR Congo triumphed 4-3 on penalties to advance to the Inter-Confederation play-off, keeping their own 2026 World Cup hopes alive.
Nigeria started brightly, taking the lead in the third minute through Frank Onyedikachi, whose shot deflected off a Congolese defender into the net.
The Congolese responded in the 32nd minute after a defensive lapse allowed Emia to equalise from close range.
The Super Eagles were further hampered when striker Victor Osimhen was forced off early due to injury, weakening Nigeria’s attacking options.
Despite chances on both sides, neither team could break the deadlock during extra time, leading to the decisive penalty shootout.
DR Congo held their nerve to win 4-3 in the spot kicks, ending Nigeria’s second consecutive attempt to qualify for the World Cup.
