Nigeria, GCPRC seal two-year deal on sustainable road management

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has signed a two-year framework agreement with the Global Cooperation Promotion Research Centre (GCPRC) to strengthen road management and infrastructure development in Nigeria.

The agreement, sealed on August 20 at FERMA’s headquarters in Abuja, will see both institutions collaborate on road repairs, maintenance, transport security, and asset management across the country. The deal is renewable by mutual consent after the initial two years.

GCPRC, an international think tank established in Nigeria in February 2025 under the ministry of budget and economic planning, is focused on fostering global partnerships and deepening Nigeria-China relations.

The partnership is expected to draw from international best practices, particularly China’s expertise in modern road construction and management, while also prioritising technology transfer, innovation, and capacity building.

FERMA Managing Director, Emeka Agbasi, described the pact as a milestone in the agency’s mandate to improve and sustain Nigeria’s federal road network. He noted the deal would enhance road safety and quality while boosting the country’s ability to manage critical infrastructure in the long term.

On his part, GCPRC Director Li Zhensheng said the collaboration reflects a shared vision for development and stronger Nigeria-China ties. He stressed that beyond road infrastructure, the initiative would promote economic growth, industrial integration, and mutually beneficial cooperation.

According to FERMA, the agreement lays a foundation for long-term collaboration that could transform Nigeria’s transport infrastructure and secure more sustainable management practices nationwide.
