Nigeria needs solutions-driven power policy, says Alaafin of Oyo

By Adejayan Gbenga –

The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has called for a comprehensive and solutions-driven national power policy to tackle Nigeria’s longstanding electricity problems.

The monarch made the call on Monday during the commissioning of a 500KVA transformer donated to the Ojongbodu community in Oyo West Local Government Area by the family of the late business mogul, Alhaji Moshood Ajisafe.

Oba Owoade warned against encouraging the importation of generators, describing Nigeria as the world’s leading generator-dependent nation. He said the trend contributes to environmental and noise pollution while enriching diesel importation cartels at the expense of Nigerians.

The Alaafin emphasised that access to electricity significantly improves rural living conditions by enhancing safety, supporting education, and easing household tasks. He noted that electrified environments enable students to study after dark and access digital educational resources.

He added that electricity strengthens the healthcare system, allowing medical facilities to operate essential equipment, preserve vaccines, and deliver better patient care. According to him, these improvements ultimately save lives in rural communities.

Oba Owoade further highlighted the economic gains of rural electrification, saying it boosts small enterprises, encourages agricultural mechanisation, and supports systems such as irrigation and cold storage — all of which enhance productivity and farmers’ income.

He stated that a reliable power supply also reduces the burden on women and girls, who often spend long hours fetching water and firewood. With electricity, he said, they can focus on education and income-generating activities.

Speaking earlier, Abuja-based architect Mr Bayo Ajisafe, who represented the donating family, said the gesture was part of their commitment to the well-being of the community. He noted that such contributions strengthen social bonds and help build a more resilient and compassionate society.
