Nigeria has nominated Dr. Taoheed Olufemi Elias as its candidate for election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, announced the nomination on Wednesday via his official X account.
“On behalf of the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I am honoured to announce the nomination of Dr. Taoheed Olufemi Elias as Nigeria’s candidate for election to the International Court of Justice,” Tuggar said.
Dr. Elias is widely regarded as one of the leading figures in international law, with a career marked by decades of service, extensive legal scholarship, and a commitment to justice, equity, and the rule of law. His record, the minister noted, reflects the ideals on which the ICJ was founded and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
According to Tuggar, the nomination underscores Nigeria’s commitment to a rules-based international order where peace is safeguarded, justice is impartial, and all nations have an equal voice regardless of size or power.
The Nigerian government urged the international community to support Dr. Elias’s candidacy, expressing confidence that his election would strengthen global justice and promote the peaceful settlement of disputes among nations.
