Nigeria Police reaffirms commitment to secure Ondo, ahead gubernatorial elections

The Nigeria Police Force, alongside other security agencies, is primed for the upcoming Ondo State gubernatorial elections, scheduled to take place across the state’s 18 Local Government Areas.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Sylvester Abiodun Alabi, who oversees election security for Ondo, briefed the press and addressed officers in Akure on the extensive security measures underway.
Speaking at the Ondo State Police Command Headquarters, DIG Alabi assured citizens of robust preparations, with security personnel being deployed to all 203 Wards and 3,933 Polling Units.
According to him, each polling station will be manned by at least four police officers, working in tandem with other security agencies to safeguard the voting process.
Emphasizing a proactive approach, DIG Alabi highlighted the use of intelligence gathering to counter potential security threats and electoral interference. He noted that these strategies aim to detect and prevent electoral malpractices, including vote-buying and fraud, to uphold the integrity of the election.
“We are committed to a free and fair election process, and we have conducted a comprehensive threat assessment to pinpoint vulnerable areas,” he said.
He further explained that adequate personnel are stationed across these areas, with contingency plans in place to address any incidents that could arise before, during, or after the vote.
DIG Alabi urged collaboration from both the public and election security agencies, emphasizing the importance of adherence to the Electoral Act, 2023, and INEC guidelines. He reminded citizens that any electoral offenders would be apprehended and prosecuted in line with the law.
