Nigeria Police refutes claims by Sowore on legality of IGP’s tenure

The Nigeria Police Force has strongly refuted recent claims made by Mr. Omoyele Sowore, suggesting that the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is illegal.

The force described these claims as “baseless” and “misleading,” aimed at undermining the legitimacy of the IGP’s appointment and public trust in the Nigeria Police.

In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police Force clarified that IGP Egbetokun’s appointment is in full accordance with the law, specifically the Police Act, 2020 (as amended).

According to Section 7(6) of the Act, the person appointed to the office of the Inspector-General of Police is to hold office for four years, which is clearly applicable to IGP Egbetokun.

The statement further emphasized that the IGP’s appointment was ratified by the Police Council and validated by the Presidency, with his tenure running from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2027.

The statement explained that the recent amendments to the Police Act, particularly Section 8A, were designed to ensure stability in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

The amendment guarantees that any IGP appointed will remain in office for the full term stipulated in their letter of appointment, promoting continuity and enhancing the police’s capacity to implement long-term policies without the threat of abrupt termination.

The Nigeria Police Force also reiterated that IGP Egbetokun’s position as the 22nd Indigenous Inspector-General of Police is both legally and procedurally sound.

It condemned Sowore’s statements as an attempt to erode public confidence and create confusion about the leadership of the Force.

The statement concluded with a stern warning to individuals and groups spreading such unfounded claims, urging them to avoid disinformation that could undermine national security.

The Nigeria Police urged citizens to focus on constructive discussions that contribute to public safety and the continued success of law enforcement efforts across the country.
