Nigeria recovers $52.88 million linked to Diezani Alison-Madueke from U.S

The Federal Government has recovered $52.88 million in assets linked to former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, from the United States.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, made the announcement on Friday during a formal signing ceremony of the asset repatriation agreement in Abuja.

Fagbemi revealed that $50 million of the funds would be allocated through the World Bank to support rural electrification projects, while the remaining $2 million would be utilized by the International Institute of Justice to strengthen Nigeria’s justice system and combat corruption.

“This asset return marks another milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Nigeria and the United States to fight corruption and uphold the rule of law,” Fagbemi said.

“He described the development as a significant step in President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to tackling corruption and improving governance in Nigeria.

U.S. Ambassador Stresses Accountability
Speaking at the event, U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, urged the Nigerian government to ensure transparent and effective use of the recovered assets.

He emphasized the importance of monitoring and accountability to guarantee that the funds are utilized for the benefit of Nigerians.

The recovery marks another chapter in Nigeria’s efforts to retrieve looted funds and highlights the cooperation between the two nations in addressing corruption and promoting good governance.
