Nigeria seeks regional cooperation to combat cross-border crime

The Federal Government has called for greater collaboration with West African and Sahel nations to enhance border security through data and intelligence sharing.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Border Security Summit in London, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo emphasized the need for proactive measures to prevent cross-border crimes rather than merely reacting to them.

“There is a need for collaboration between countries within the Sahel and West African sub-regions for better international partnerships and information dissemination,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He highlighted the importance of data sharing in curbing organized immigration crimes, stressing that border control issues affect all nations in the region.

“Nigeria has implemented an automated border control system with enhanced security measures to tackle irregular migration,” he added. “We cannot afford to lose the battle before it even starts.”

Tunji-Ojo assured world leaders that Nigeria remains committed to strengthening its immigration policies and working with global partners to address transnational crimes such as human trafficking, smuggling, and fraud.

The summit provided a platform for regional ministers to discuss collaborative strategies for improving border security and ensuring safer migration management across West Africa.
