Nigeria to conduct national census in 2025, says NPC Chairman

Nigeria’s long-awaited national census is now scheduled to take place in 2025, according to Nasir Isa Kwarra, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC).
Kwarra made this announcement on Thursday during the 2024 anniversary of the Nairobi Summit on the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), held in Abuja.
He emphasized that the prolonged delay in conducting the census has hampered Nigeria’s ability to effectively plan for population needs and allocate resources, particularly in underserved and rural communities.
“The absence of accurate population data creates challenges in tailoring reproductive health services and interventions to specific demographic groups. This ultimately undermines efforts to reduce maternal mortality and improve access to family planning,” Kwarra stated.
Nigeria’s last population census was conducted in 2006, despite the United Nations’ recommendation for a census every decade. Although the exercise was initially planned for 2023, it was postponed twice during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, with the responsibility deferred to the incoming government.
Kwarra highlighted the critical implications of outdated population data on national development. “The major setback Nigeria faces is the delay in conducting a population and housing census, which is fundamental for informed decision-making,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of accurate demographic data in fostering social progress, inclusivity, and gender equality.
“We are gathered in the spirit of a shared commitment to progress, inclusivity, and the empowerment of individuals, particularly women and young people.
“Our focus is on advancing sexual and reproductive health, eliminating gender-based violence (GBV), and promoting equal opportunities for everyone in our nation,” he added.
The 2025 census is expected to provide a comprehensive assessment of Nigeria’s population, guiding policy decisions and resource allocation for sustainable development.
