Nigeria to offer scholarships to OECS students starting next academic year

President Bola Tinubu has announced a new scholarship programme that will enable students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to study in Nigerian universities beginning next academic year.
Speaking during a joint press conference with Saint Lucian Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre on Monday, following a high-level luncheon with OECS leaders, Tinubu said the initiative is part of efforts to strengthen ties between Nigeria and the Caribbean.
“This is about building bridges between Africa and the Caribbean,” Tinubu stated. “The scholarship programme is one of several steps we are taking to deepen people-to-people connections and expand opportunities in education, trade, and development.”
He added that discussions are ongoing to introduce visa waivers for holders of diplomatic and official passports from OECS countries to ease travel and foster closer cooperation.
A joint Nigeria-OECS committee will oversee the scholarship rollout, finalising selection criteria and ensuring timely placement of students in Nigerian institutions.
Responding to questions about potential challenges, Tinubu expressed optimism: “I don’t look at difficulties. I look at problem-solving. If we move in a straight line, we can reach our goals quickly and efficiently.”
Prime Minister Pierre welcomed the initiative, calling it a “timely and practical expression of solidarity” from Nigeria. He confirmed that the committee will also explore air connectivity, trade, tourism, and reciprocal visa arrangements.
“Students are expected to begin studies in Nigeria next academic year. This is immediate action,” Pierre affirmed. “The committee will prioritise people-to-people exchanges, including visa requirements.”
