Nigeria Weightlifting Federation boss Ibrahim, get IWF role

President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Dr. Abdul Ibrahim Aladi, has been elected Chairman of the Gender Equity Commission of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) following the IWF Electoral Congress held on Sunday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Ibrahim secured 122 votes to top the list of five elected officials from different countries and will now lead the Gender Equity Commission for a four-year term.

Other elected members include Delmis Rodriguez Pargas (Cuba) with 114 votes; Brunella Mauricci (Peru), 108 votes; Egypt’s Wafaa Mahmoud Mohamed Moussa, 103 votes; and Zukhra Abdullaeva (Uzbekistan), who garnered 85 votes.

Meanwhile, NWF’s Lawrence Iquaibom was also elected into the Coaching and Research Committee of the IWF. Iquaibom, who traveled to Riyadh for the Congress, was unanimously voted into the committee.

Reacting to the development, Dr. Ibrahim described the dual victory as a significant achievement for Nigeria’s weightlifting community. He thanked everyone who supported their efforts throughout the election process.

Dr. Ibrahim, who had earlier supervised the weightlifting events at the 22nd National Sports Festival (Ogun 2024) in Sagamu before heading to Riyadh, expressed his gratitude for the recognition given to Nigeria on the international stage.

“I am deeply delighted with my election into the Gender Equity Commission and that of Lawrence Iquaibom into the Coaching and Research Committee. This is a proud moment for the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation,” he said.

“We will continue to contribute our quota to the development of weightlifting in Nigeria and globally. I’m happy we fought and won this battle for the country.”
