Nigeria’s Second Lady, Hajiya Nana Shettima, and Brazil’s Second Lady, Maria Lucia Alckmin, on Wednesday embarked on a cultural tour of the Nike Art Gallery and the 5 Cowries Initiative in Abuja, underscoring the importance of art and creativity in promoting national identity and youth empowerment.
The visit was part of the activities for the ongoing Nigeria–Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM), which has brought the Brazilian Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, and his wife to Nigeria to strengthen bilateral cooperation. Key areas of focus include defence, agriculture, energy, and cultural exchange.
Renowned artist and founder of the gallery, Chief Oyenike Monica Okundaye, personally guided the two Second Ladies through the gallery’s extensive collection of Nigerian art, featuring paintings, charcoal drawings, textile works, bead art, and traditional sculptures. The gallery holds over 5,000 pieces that showcase Nigeria’s diverse cultures, history, and social evolution.
Nike Art Gallery has long been a hub for nurturing young artists and preserving indigenous art forms. It also serves as a platform to promote Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage to international audiences.
The delegation also visited the 5 Cowries Initiative, an innovative project that leverages art to enhance education. Through interactive and creative programs, the initiative engages young learners, helping them develop critical thinking skills while fostering cultural awareness.
Mrs. Maria Lucia Alckmin expressed admiration for Nigeria’s vibrant artistic scene and praised the use of art as a tool for education and inspiration.
Hajiya Nana Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to fostering cultural exchange and supporting youth development through creative initiatives.
Both Second Ladies emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in arts and education to strengthen ties between Nigeria and Brazil.
