Nigerian editors set July 23 lecture on credible elections

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) will hold the fourth edition of the Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture in Lagos on July 23, with discussions centred on strengthening the credibility of elections in Nigeria.

The lecture, scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, is themed: “The Media, INEC, Voters and Path to Credible Elections.”

A statement signed by NGE President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, said Professor Sylvester Odion of the Department of Political Science, Lagos State University (LASU, will deliver the lecture, while former Governor Kayode Fayemi will chair the event.

The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected as Chief Host and Special Guest of Honour, alongside the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

Other expected guests include former Governor Olusegun Osoba , Vanguard publisher, Sam Amuka, senior government officials, media executives, editors, and representatives of civil society organisations. The event will also attract Mass Communication and Journalism lecturers and students from Caleb University, Yaba College of Technology and the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ).

The NGE said the annual lecture series, introduced in 2023, was established to preserve the legacy of , whom it described as an iconic journalist, former Guild president, former Lagos State governor and former Minister of Works. It noted that the lecture provides a platform for media leaders, public officials and civil society to reflect on nation-building, governance and the role of the press.

The Guild added that the memorial lecture continues to promote thought leadership, policy debate and national reflection while inspiring future journalists. It said students are invited annually to learn the values of service, excellence and dedication to journalism, and to interact with practising professionals who can serve as role models.
