Alex Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has publicly apologized for his recent behavior toward an Uber driver outside his residence, an incident captured in a viral video.
In the video, posted on X (formerly Twitter), Ikwechegh, a first-term representative, was seen slapping the driver three times and making threats, boasting, “Do you know who I am?”
Following the video’s release, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police in Abuja launched an investigation into the matter.
In response to the footage, Ikwechegh described his actions as “unacceptable behavior,” acknowledging the public outcry that ensued. In a statement on Monday, he expressed deep regret for his conduct, admitting it was “unbecoming of a public official” and a breach of public trust.
Ikwechegh extended apologies to the driver, his constituents, and Nigerians at large, recognizing that his actions fell short of the standards expected of a public servant. He assured the public of his full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation and affirmed his commitment to justice and transparency.
He also acknowledged the swift condemnation from both his political party and the Nigerian Police, highlighting their shared commitment to upholding the law and protecting citizens’ rights.
To address the incident constructively, Ikwechegh revealed plans to seek professional counseling and engage in community service projects aimed at fostering respect, empathy, and understanding. He urged Nigerians to join in promoting a culture of dignity and mutual respect.
This incident has sparked renewed attention on the conduct of public officials and their responsibility to uphold high ethical standards, with Ikwechegh pledging to use the experience as a foundation for personal growth and community advocacy.
