Nigerian military intensifies efforts against terrorist group Lukawaras

By Kunle Sanni

The Nigerian military has intensified operations to dismantle a newly identified ISIS-linked terrorist group, Lukarawas, which has established bases in the northwest states of Sokoto and Kebbi. The military aims to eliminate the group, which is responsible for disrupting local communities and imposing unlawful levies on residents.

Major General Edward Buba, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, confirmed the military’s commitment to neutralizing this threat. “We are already pursuing them, and we will take them out,” he said, underlining the military’s focus on securing Nigerian territory.

General Buba revealed that Lukarawas fighters infiltrated Nigeria from Niger Republic, setting up camps in remote areas between Sokoto and Kebbi. Local residents initially believed the group had peaceful intentions, delaying reports to authorities until the group began violent activities.

“This is the first known infiltration of Sahel-based ISIS-linked fighters into Nigeria,” explained General Buba. He noted that the group exploited the challenging terrain and gaps in regional cooperation between Nigeria and Niger Republic to establish bases in isolated regions of the northwest.

To counter the spread of Lukarawas, the military is conducting extensive operations in the affected areas. General Buba urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to security forces, which could help prevent further incursions by terrorist groups.

General Buba also highlighted recent military successes in the ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry across Nigeria. In the past month, troops have neutralized 481 terrorists, arrested 741 criminals, and rescued 492 kidnapping victims. Additionally, they recovered 480 weapons and over 9,000 rounds of ammunition. “This is another example of the military’s outstanding performance against terrorists across northern states,” he remarked.

Terrorists in Northcentral Seeking Safe Passage to Surrender

In another development, General Buba revealed that several terror gang leaders in Northcentral Nigeria have requested to surrender. Facing intense pressure from superior military firepower and a steady loss of fighters, these gang leaders are considering laying down their arms.

“The terrorists are left with the option of surrendering or facing death on the battlefield,” Buba stated. “There is no third option.”

He explained that the military has opened a “surrender corridor” for terrorists wishing to disarm, ensuring that those who choose to lay down their weapons will not be harmed.

“When an enemy raises their hands and drops their weapon, it is a crime to shoot at them. We are a professional force, and we are committed to upholding this principle,” he said.

The military has assured these groups of a safe passage if they surrender, emphasizing that similar measures have already been successfully implemented in the Northeast. General Buba noted that the military’s approach reflects both its strength and its commitment to a peaceful and secure Nigeria.
