Nigerian singer Destiny Boy dies at 22

Nigerian Afrofuji singer Afeez Adesina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, has died at the age of 22.

The artiste, who rose to prominence as a teenager for his fusion of traditional Fuji music with contemporary sounds, reportedly passed away on Sunday after a brief illness.

Destiny Boy began his career at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, Lagos, where he worked as a backup dancer for veteran Fuji musician Pasuma. That early exposure helped shape his musical style and performance skills before he transitioned into recording.

He gained widespread attention in 2019 after releasing a Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song If, which went viral on social media and introduced him to a national audience. The success of the cover opened doors within the music industry and boosted his growing profile.

Following the breakthrough, he released several Fuji-inspired renditions of popular songs by artistes including Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice and Small Doctor, steadily building a fan base across the country.

He later focused on original works, putting out tracks such as Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio Gbonkankan and Lowkey.

Reports of his death were confirmed by Bolisco, an associate of singer Habeeb Okikiola, also known as Portable, who said the young artiste had been unwell before his passing. According to the account, Destiny Boy died in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

As of the time of reporting, his family and management had not released an official statement. However, videos circulating online showed his body being transported to his parents’ residence in Ayetoro, Ogun State.
