Nigeria’s aviation compliance score rises to 75.5%

…removed from AWG watchlist

Nigeria’s aviation industry has made a leap in global compliance, with the country’s score on the Cape Town Convention (CTC) Compliance Index rising from 70.5% to 75.5%. This improvement follows the signing of the Administrative Rules for the repossession of aircraft by creditors and lessors, known as the Irrevocable De-registration and Export Request Authorization (IDERA).

The Aviation Working Group (AWG), which monitors global aviation compliance, announced the upgraded score on Thursday. Nigeria’s advancement places it in the ‘high category’ and officially removes the country from the AWG’s watchlist of non-compliant nations.

In a communication addressed to Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, the AWG confirmed that with the signing of IDERA, Nigeria has now fully complied with CTC requirements. This compliance is expected to unlock new opportunities for the country’s aviation sector, particularly in aircraft financing and leasing arrangements.

The development is seen as a significant boost for Nigerian airline operators, who will now have greater access to global aircraft leasing markets. This is expected to enhance flight regularity, expand serviced routes, and promote competitive ticket pricing, benefiting the traveling public.

The confirmation from the AWG was officially communicated to Minister Keyamo, signaling the end of Nigeria’s compliance process and paving the way for further growth in the aviation sector.
