Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated N1 billion through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) to support infrastructural development at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

During the commissioning ceremony held at OAU’s Oduduwa Hall, Tinubu inaugurated a 2.7km road, hostels, a grand pavilion, and a monument named in her honor. She expressed concerns about the state of the institution’s environment and highlighted the importance of maintenance for longevity, referencing how buildings over 200 years old in developed countries remain in excellent condition due to proper upkeep.

“When we build, we clean and renovate; that is why you see buildings over 200 years old in developed countries still looking impeccable due to maintenance,” she said.

Reflecting on the institution’s poor horticultural landscape, the First Lady remarked, “If I had more resources, I would do everything to improve it.”

Returning to her alma mater 41 years after her graduation, Tinubu emphasized the current administration’s commitment to education and youth development, ensuring access to education regardless of financial limitations. She encouraged students to take advantage of the National Students Loan Scheme and the Renewed Hope Initiative’s National Scholarship Program.

Tinubu also expressed her gratitude to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, for the honor, commending his leadership and love for his people.

In his earlier remarks, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, lauded the First Lady for her advocacy in education and for promoting resilience and progress. He described her as a dependable leader committed to societal development.

“Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s advocacy for women’s and youth education has made a significant impact on Nigerian politics and governance. Her dedication to improving access to quality education has earned her admiration and respect. She is a beacon of hope for the next generation, showing that through dedication and perseverance, great things can be achieved,” the monarch said.

The Ooni added, “It is in recognition of her contributions to societal development that we gather today to name a 2.7-kilometer road and a pavilion after her in this great institution.”
