NIHOTOUR partners with Immigration Service to regulate expatriates in hospitality sector

The National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) has entered into a partnership with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to enhance standards and promote equity in the country’s hospitality and tourism sector.

Under the leadership of its newly appointed Director-General, Aare (Dr) Abisoye Fagade, NIHOTOUR aims to address concerns over the dominance of expatriates in top positions within the industry, where they often earn significantly higher wages in foreign currencies than their Nigerian counterparts.

A key aspect of the collaboration is the introduction of mandatory NIHOTOUR certification for expatriates seeking work permits in Nigeria’s hospitality and tourism sectors.

Both agencies will also conduct a joint review of the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card (CERPAC) process to ensure compliance with national professional standards and employment equity principles.

The partnership also includes a series of specialized training programs for immigration officers to improve service delivery at Nigeria’s airports and entry points.

Speaking on the initiative, Fagade stated, “Our mission is to empower Nigerian talent, ensure fairness in employment, and elevate our hospitality and tourism industry to globally competitive standards.

“This collaboration will not only safeguard local opportunities but also position Nigeria as a leading tourism destination in Africa.”
