NIMASA: How Jamoh’s moves to extend tenure was aborted

The four-year tenure of the Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh ended on Sunday 10th March 2024.
Before the end of his tenure, Jamoh who took over from Dakuku Peterside on March 10th 2020, made moves to retain the position beyond this year.
It was gathered that some stakeholders in the Maritime industry who were not comfortable with his style of leadership and also interested in his job launched sustained media war against him.
WesternPost gathered that the Presidency got wind of the series of media reports and that prompted the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola to direct the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Oloruntola Olufemi to instruct Jamoh to hand over the reigns of office to the most senior Executive Director in the agency.

Meanwhile, Jamoh had resumed work normally on Monday 11th March 2024 despite the expiration of his tenure a day earlier, until a letter from the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy arrived his office, directing him to hand over to the most senior Executive Director in the agency.
The letter titled “COMPLETION OF TENURE AS DIRECTOR GENERAL/CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, NIGERIAN MARITIME ADMINISTRATION AND SAFETY AGENCY (NIMASA)” was dated 10th March 2024 and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Oloruntola Olufemi.
The letter effectively ended moves to extend his stay in office and confirmed the reluctance of the Federal Government to renew his tenure.
“Upon receipt of the letter, he had to quickly prepare his handover note and relinquish office to the most senior Executive Director Mr Chudi Offodile, who is the Executive Director, Finance and Administration,” a Director in NIMASA
Although, in a statement titled “Social Media Campaign of Calumny Against NIMASA DG”, Jamoh described an allegation that the sum of N1.5 trillion and USD9 million was found in his personal account as false.
“We wish to state categorically that there is no iota of truth in this allegation as this social media post had been earlier circulated over three years ago in 2021.
“It is worthy of note that in 2021, when the allegations were then circulated, NIMASA DG had personally requested the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to investigate it.
“In the petition he personally signed and dated May 24th, 2021, Dr Jamoh complained that the viral story has impugned his integrity, character and family name.
This re-circulation of the 2021 video is the handiwork of mischief makers who are bent on misinforming unsuspecting members of the public for interest best known to them and their sponsors,” Jamoh said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Osagie Edward.
