NIRA, EFCC to strengthen collaboration on cybersecurity

The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to enhance cybersecurity in Nigeria.

This resolution was reached on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, during a courtesy visit by NIRA President, Akinsanya Adesola, and his delegation to the EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking at the meeting, Adesola highlighted the existing partnership between both organizations, which began in March 2023 with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on capacity building.

He noted that their first joint project took place in July 2023 at the EFCC Academy, adding that NIRA aims to make such initiatives an annual engagement, particularly in cybersecurity.

“We already have an existing collaboration, and we are looking at making this a continuous effort, especially in cybersecurity. We believe this will add significant value to the work of the EFCC,” Adesola stated.

In his response, Olukoyede welcomed the renewed commitment, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in tackling cybercrime. He acknowledged the alarming rate of cyber-related convictions recorded by the EFCC and stressed the need for stronger partnerships.

“Our mandate covers cybercrime, making it imperative for us to work together. The scale of cyber-related convictions we have recorded is staggering, so strengthening this collaboration is crucial.

NIRA is a key stakeholder in this fight, and I will direct that the existing MoU be reviewed to align with any recent changes in laws and regulations. We are committed to engaging more frequently to ensure a secure digital space in Nigeria,” he assured.
