NITDA empowers 50 Enugu innovators, commends Governor Mbah for digital push

In a move to deepen digital inclusion in Enugu State, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) empowered 50 young innovators with digital tools and commended Governor Peter Mbah for supporting the establishment of its South-East Zonal Office.

Delivering a goodwill message, NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa, represented by Dr. Aristotle Onumo, said the Governor’s backing was instrumental to the successful launch and strong performance of the office, now regarded as one of the agency’s top-performing zonal offices nationwide.

Inuwa noted that Enugu, historically known as Nigeria’s coal city, is transitioning from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-driven one powered by the creativity and determination of its young people.

He highlighted projections that the global digital economy could contribute up to $23 trillion to GDP in the coming years, stressing that investment in digital skills is critical to Nigeria’s future prosperity and aligns with NITDA’s goal of achieving 70 per cent digital literacy by 2027.

Over 900 youths registered on NITDA’s digital training platform, with 50 outstanding participants receiving digital tools, while 250 others were recognised for their dedication and excellence during the programme.

In his remarks, Governor Peter Mbah described the festival as more than a technology conference, calling it a validation of Enugu’s ambition to become a key player in Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem. He said the state’s greatest resource today is the creativity and skills of its people.

Mbah emphasised that investments in technology, education, and digital infrastructure would help transform local ideas into globally competitive solutions. He cited global firms such as Apple Inc., Microsoft, and Amazon as examples of how control of digital infrastructure drives economic power.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Prince Lawrence Ezeh, said thousands of youths have been trained through various initiatives, with new tech partnerships and clusters in blockchain and gaming positioning Enugu as an emerging technology hub. He added that ETF 2026 aims to strengthen businesses, communities, and public services through expanded digital reforms.
