NLC urges compliance with Minimum Wage Act, workers’ welfare in 2025

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the federal government to prioritise social dialogue and citizens’ welfare in 2025 to ensure industrial peace and national progress.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made the appeal in a New Year message titled “In 2025, Hope is Our Collective Resolve” released on Wednesday in Abuja.

Ajaero urged the government to honour agreements with trade unions and emphasised that governance must translate into tangible benefits for the people.

He stated that the welfare of citizens remains the core justification for any government’s existence.

“To create a thriving, democratic nation, we need a system built on the tenets of social dialogue, allowing critical stakeholders to participate actively in nation-building,” Ajaero said.

“Such inclusiveness will foster deeper ownership of government policies, ensuring stability and sustainability.”

The NLC President stressed the need for all levels of government to comply with the provisions of the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act, noting that a productive workforce depends on workers’ ability to meet their basic needs.

“The country will become more productive when workers’ incomes are sufficient to meet their basic needs,” he said. “We look forward to fruitful engagement on this with our social partners as we move into 2025.”

Ajaero urged unity and collective resolve to create a Nigeria where workers’ welfare, decent work environments, and security are prioritised.

“Let us unite in our resolve to ensure a Nigeria where workers’ welfare, decent work environments, and the security of life and property are prioritised.

“Together, through collective effort and determination, we can transform our nation into one of progress, inclusion, and shared prosperity,” he said.
