Nnamdi Kanu medically fit to face trial, says NMA

The medical team set up by the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to ascertain the health status of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has said the ailment he complained of is not life-threatening.

According to a report by The Nation, Justice James Omotosho had directed the medical team to evaluate Kanu’s true physical condition during his terrorism trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja, due to contradictions from medical experts from the prosecution and the defence.

The panel’s report, submitted to the court on October 13 by the prosecution team led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), indicated during Thursday’s hearings that the defendant’s sickness is not life-threatening, concluding that Kanu is medically fit to stand trial.

Consequently, Justice Omotosho stated that the court was persuaded the defendant could proceed with the trial and granted the defendant six consecutive days, beginning October 23, to open and complete his defence.
