NNPCL debunks explosion reports at Warri Refinery

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has dismissed reports of an explosion at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), clarifying that no such incident occurred.

In a statement issued on Friday, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, refuted the claims, stating that any reports suggesting an explosion were entirely false.

“NNPC Ltd wishes to clarify that there was no explosion at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC). Any reports suggesting otherwise are completely false,” the statement read.

The company explained that routine maintenance work is currently underway at the refinery. It also recalled that on January 25, 2025, operations at WRPC Area 1 were deliberately reduced to facilitate intervention works on specific equipment, including field instruments necessary for sustainable operations.

The intervention, according to NNPCL, is crucial to ensuring the production of standard-quality finished and intermediate petroleum products, particularly Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Kerosene (Kero).

NNPCL reassured the public that operations at the refinery remain stable and that the maintenance activities are part of its commitment to ensuring efficiency in refining operations.
