No EndSars protester in detention, police replies Shehu Sani

The Nigeria Police Force has said that no person is being forcibly detained due to the EndSARS demonstration of 2020.

Its Spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi stated this in a statement released on his X handle on Sunday.

He denied the claims by Senator Shehu Sani at the 2024 Democracy Day Dinner on June 12, 2024, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja that some young people had been imprisoned since the 2020 EndSARS demonstration.

Adejobi said none of the people arrested is still being held illegally.

”For emphasis, no one anywhere in Nigeria is under Police detention or being wrongly persecuted for participating in the EndSARS protest,” he contended.

ACP Adejobi added that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos pardoned about 100 people detained by the police following the demonstration.

“All arrested individuals have been processed according to the law,” Adejobi emphasized.

Nigerians protested in the streets on October 8, 2020, over the atrocities committed by the infamous Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a division of the Nigeria Police created to combat violent crimes.

Some of the demonstrators were arrested and detained by the police.
