No lives lost as firefighters battle Apapa terminal fire

No lives were lost after firefighters successfully battled and contained a fire outbreak at the Bono Energy Terminal within the Ibru Jetty Complex along the Apapa-Oworonshoki Expressway in Lagos on Friday.

The incident, which occurred near Coconut Bus Stop in Olodi Apapa, involved a five-million-litre Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) storage tank, according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS).

The agency said it received a distress call at about 12:04 p.m., prompting the deployment of firefighters from the Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu and Isolo Fire Stations, who arrived at the scene by 12:16 p.m.

In a statement, the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said emergency responders, working alongside teams from neighbouring oil and gas facilities, brought the blaze under control before completely extinguishing it at about 1:54 p.m.

She noted that the swift and coordinated response prevented the fire from spreading to nearby storage tanks and other critical infrastructure, thereby averting more extensive damage.

Adeseye said the cause of the fire had yet to be determined, adding that investigations were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

She confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were recorded during the firefighting operation.

The fire service commended all emergency responders and stakeholders involved in the operation, saying their cooperation was instrumental in the successful containment of the blaze.
