NOA mourns Buhari, urges nationwide compliance with flag-lowering directive

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader who left a lasting impact on the nation’s political and moral fabric.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, said the agency would ensure compliance with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive that the national flag be flown at half-mast for seven days in honour of the late President.
Issa-Onilu urged public institutions to strictly observe the directive, adding that the NOA would monitor compliance across the country. He also encouraged private organisations and individual citizens to participate in the gesture as a mark of respect for Buhari’s legacy.
“This moment of national loss calls for reflection and recognition of a man who served Nigeria with conviction, courage, and a deep commitment to integrity,” the agency said in the statement.
“His tenure, both as a military and civilian leader, was marked by a vision for national renewal, anti-corruption, and strong institutions.”
The NOA called on Nigerians to go beyond symbolic mourning and uphold the values of patriotism, discipline, and service that Buhari stood for during his lifetime.
“Honouring the former President is not just ceremonial—it is a national symbol of gratitude and respect,” the statement read.
“As we lower our flags, may we lift up our shared hopes for a stronger and more united Nigeria,” the agency added.
