The Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC) has presented an 11-point action plan aimed at addressing longstanding issues in Nigerian sports to Mallam Shehu Dikko, the newly appointed Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

During a meeting held at Dikko’s office at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Monday, the NOC delegation, led by its President, Engr. Abu Gumel, outlined key challenges and solutions to reposition Nigerian sports. The white paper presented highlighted the need for structural reforms, better funding, and enhanced grassroots development, among other priorities.

A major focus of the proposal was the introduction of a yearly Olympics preparation fund to improve outcomes in training, qualification, and overall performance during the Games.

Key Recommendations from the NOC:

  1. Yearly and timely release of Olympic preparation funds over a four-year period to support training, qualification, and participation at the Games.
  2. Rehabilitation of sports facilities at local, state, and national levels to enable athletes to train at home for major events.
  3. Ensuring all facilities comply with Olympic standards and modern specifications.
  4. Revamping and adequately funding the zonal offices of the NSC to encourage state and local governments to focus on grassroots sports development.
  5. Developing a succession plan for ageing athletes to ensure continuity.
  6. Releasing Olympics training grants at least one year before the Games.
  7. Constant training and retraining of athletes, coaches, and technical officials at national and international levels.
  8. Timely procurement of the right sports equipment for federations.
  9. Introduction and enforcement of a code of conduct for athletes and officials to promote discipline.
  10. Encouraging sports federation officials to attend congresses and vie for positions at regional and international boards.
  11. Collaborating with the private sector to revamp high-altitude training centers and promote sports sponsorship.

The NOC delegation included prominent officials such as First Vice-President Chief Obinna Ogba, Second Vice-President Ishaku Tikon, Third Vice-President Olumide Oyedeji, and Secretary-General Tunde Popoola.

Mallam Shehu Dikko welcomed the NOC’s recommendations, emphasizing that they align with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for Nigerian sports.

“We are very delighted with the recommendations of the NOC. They align with our direction,” Dikko said.

He assured the delegation of his commitment to addressing funding challenges, revealing that the NSC is actively engaging the Budget Office to ensure adequate financial support for sports development.

“Funding issues will be resolved. We are speaking the language they can understand,” Dikko added.

The NSC Chairman also promised innovative approaches to drive the growth of Nigerian sports, highlighting plans for significant reforms in the coming months.
