‘Not in our street’ – Community opposes construction of mortuary in residential area

  • Demands govt intervention

Residents of Morayo in the Ondo West Local Government Area have urged the Ondo State Government to halt the construction of a mortuary in their community.

The call was made through the Morayo Landlords and Landladies Association, which petitioned the state Ministry of Health, describing the project as illegal and a threat to public health.

Grand Patron of the association, Most Snr Evangelist Clement Akinmaye, insisted that placing a mortuary in a densely populated residential area was unacceptable.

“How will reasonable people think of building a mortuary in a community like this? We are totally against it. The original owner of the land had proposed building a hall before his death. We all pray for the progress of the community, not something like this,” he said.

Timilehin Akinmusayo, the youth president of the community, also called on the government to intervene and prevent potential unrest.

“Our stand as a community remains ‘no’ to the building of the mortuary in our street. It is being constructed along the major road leading to the community, where people pass daily. This poses a danger to the area’s development.

“An event centre was initially proposed for the land by its original owner. However, the current developer began work on the mortuary months ago without consulting the community,” Akinmusayo alleged.
