NPC Boss takes reform drive to Imo, unveils push for digital birth, death registration

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, on Thursday paid a working visit to the Commission’s Imo State Office in Owerri as part of his nationwide tour to strengthen staff welfare, stakeholder relations and public awareness of the Commission’s activities.

He was accompanied by the Director-General, Dr. Osifo Tellson Ojogun, the Director of Public Affairs, Nma Alhaji Shehu, and other senior officials from headquarters. The delegation was received by the Federal Commissioner representing Imo State, Prof. Uba Nnabue, his Enugu State counterpart, Hon. Ejike Ezeh, and top management staff of the state office.

In his remarks, Dr. Yusuf reaffirmed his commitment to implementing his 7-Point Agenda, noting that it has received broad support within and outside the Commission. He said the visit reflected the agenda’s emphasis on staff welfare, stakeholder engagement and institutional strengthening.

The Chairman assured employees that their welfare remains a top priority, commending them for their dedication and urging continued support for the Commission’s leadership and reform initiatives.

He also praised Prof. Nnabue for fostering cordial relations with staff, describing the warm reception as evidence of effective leadership. Yusuf expressed appreciation for the hospitality extended to his team despite the short notice of the visit.

Addressing concerns about the poor condition of the Owerri office building, the Chairman pledged to source funds for renovation, following reports of a leaking roof that has damaged equipment and requires urgent repairs.

In his welcome address, Prof. Nnabue described the visit as historic, noting it was the first by a sitting NPC Chairman to the Imo office in over 15 years. He thanked the Commission for enabling the office to acquire its own property and reported the successful completion of the 2025 Mini-NDHS in the state without incident.

The Director-General announced that a circular would be issued next month for the full implementation of digital birth and death registration nationwide. The visit concluded with an interactive session between the Chairman and staff to address key operational issues.
