NPFL: Kwara Utd host Remo Stars in clash of champions

By Tosin Omojola –

The Rashidi Yekini Mainbowl of the George Innih Stadium will be agog as Remo Stars, the league title holders, confront hosts Kwara United, the Federation Cup champions, as Matchday Eleven of the NPFL takes centre stage this weekend.

This will be Remo Stars’ first game after their ouster from the CAF Champions League, and they will be up against a Kwara United side that has been trying to pick up the pieces after their exit from the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Harmony Boys will hope to continue their good run, having remained unbeaten in their last three matches — picking two away draws against Wikki Tourists and Rangers International, and winning their previous home fixture against Katsina United.

However, the Sky Blue Stars, still ruing their elimination from the continental scene last weekend by Mamelodi Sundowns, will be hoping to bounce back with a positive result against the homers.

The Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, will play host to a South-South derby between Bendel Insurance and Warri Wolves in the second fixture of Saturday.

Sunday will also witness mouth-watering fixtures as El-Kanemi Warriors take on Rangers International, Shooting Stars face Katsina United, and Barau FC entertain Wikki Tourists in Kano.

Coach Stanley Eguma will attempt to ease the pressure, having been issued a two-match ultimatum, as Enyimba FC welcome struggling Kano Pillars in Aba, while the in-form duo of Niger Tornadoes and Abia Warriors will set the Bako Kontagora Stadium, Minna, literally on fire.

Elsewhere, Bayelsa United will play host to Plateau United in a match the Yenagoa-based side must win to save their coach’s job, Ikorodu City will host Kun Khalifat, while Rivers United will have their hands full when they welcome table toppers Nasarawa United to the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.
