NPFL suspends Plateau United goalkeeper over betting allegations

Plateau United goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka has been suspended from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) amid allegations of insider betting.
In a letter dated August 5, 2025, and signed by NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi, Adeyinka’s registration with the league was put on hold pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
The suspension follows accusations by Plateau United FC that Adeyinka was involved in betting activities during the 2024/2025 season.
The NPFL also disclosed that Adeyinka reportedly refused to sign a contract with a new club due to a clause allowing immediate termination in cases of betting offences. This refusal raised concerns and strengthened the league’s suspicions.
Article 15.5 section B of the NPFL Framework and Rules explicitly prohibits players from betting, with offenders subject to sanctions under section C. The league emphasized that betting on matches in which players participate undermines the integrity of the competition.
Adeyinka, a former Kwara United goalkeeper who has represented Nigeria at youth levels and received senior national team call-ups, will be invited to respond to the allegations as the investigation proceeds.
This development complicates a potential transfer to Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), who were reportedly close to signing him ahead of the new NPFL season starting on August 22.
If exonerated, Adeyinka’s registration may be reinstated; however, his immediate football career remains uncertain for now.
