NRC MD pledges railway revitalization, announces plans to restore key train services

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has initiated major revitalization projects within the corporation, assuring Nigerians of improved rail services. As part of this commitment, he embarked on a nationwide tour of NRC districts to assess infrastructure and address commuter concerns.
During his visit to Iddo Train Station in Lagos, Opeifa announced plans to reinstate the 2 PM mass transit train service (MTTS) for passengers commuting from Ijoko and other Ogun State border communities to Lagos Island. This decision follows repeated demands from commuters who rely on the service for their daily transportation needs.
The NRC District Manager, Engr. Augustine Arisa, and District Superintendent, Mrs. Chidinma Mba, highlighted the economic importance of the train service to the Idumota market, stressing that its operations significantly impact business activities in the area. Opeifa assured that the corporation is not only committed to sustaining the service but is also exploring the feasibility of adding an additional route after conducting market viability studies.

As part of efforts to enhance passenger experience, Opeifa revealed that the Iddo Terminal would undergo major upgrades, including infrastructure improvements and optimized capacity. He also announced the rehabilitation of train coaches and the enhancement of station interiors to boost customer satisfaction and patronage. Additionally, he directed the immediate installation of solar panels at the station to improve lighting conditions.

Opeifa warned contractors handling railway projects that failure to meet performance expectations would result in contract termination. He also disclosed that the NRC would review all land leases around the Iddo Station to ensure optimal use of railway properties.
During his tour, he expressed nostalgia over the railway’s historical relics and called on corporate organizations and philanthropists to support the NRC by providing passenger conveniences as part of their corporate social responsibility. He also reiterated the corporation’s commitment to cracking down on vandalism, urging Nigerians to report any incidents of railway asset destruction. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has been directed to prosecute anyone caught vandalizing railway infrastructure.

The Managing Director continued his tour at Agege Station, where he held a closed-door meeting with officials from the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), led by the Director of Rail Services, Engr. Olasunkanmi Okusaga. Their discussions focused on addressing security challenges between Babatunde Raji Fashola Station and the Lagos State Train Station at Agege.
At Agege Station, Opeifa inspected key facilities, including the VIP lounge, control room, ticketing area, and administrative sections. Engaging with passengers, he responded to concerns about ticketing and accessibility. He assured that efforts were underway to improve passenger flexibility and ensure a seamless transition between NRC and metro train services.
