NRC signs MoU with Plateau Govt to reopen Jos–Kuru rail line

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Plateau State Government to reopen and operate the Jos–Kuru rail corridor, aiming to boost regional transport infrastructure and stimulate economic activity.

This landmark agreement, was signed in Lagos by the Plateau State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Jatau Davou, and NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa to signifies a major step toward revitalizing Nigeria’s rail infrastructure.

The management of NRC said the MoU aligns with its shared vision of enhancing regional connectivity, improving mobility, and stimulating economic growth across Plateau State and beyond.

The Managing Director of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, in a post on X acknowledged Plateau State’s commitment to reviving long-abandoned railway infrastructure and highlighted the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments in delivering impactful projects.

He tweets, “The Jos–Kuru line, part of the historic Kafanchan–Kuru corridor that connects both Western and Eastern rail lines will play a critical role in supporting local communities, farmers, and traders through efficient cargo and passenger movement. While initial operations will run on the existing narrow gauge, plans are in motion to upgrade to standard gauge under the national railway modernization agenda.

“We commend the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Hon. Said Ahmed Alkali, for his unwavering support, which underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda. His endorsement of this initiative reinforces our resolve to expand rail services across Nigeria.

“This collaboration exemplifies what’s possible when federal and state governments work hand-in-hand to drive infrastructural development. It is not just about trains. it’s about restoring dignity, creating jobs, supporting commerce, and uniting the nation.

According to the state government, the project would help reduce transport costs and facilitate cargo movement, especially for farmers and traders. The Jos–Kuru line, which forms part of the Kafanchan–Kuru route, will link Nigeria’s Western and Eastern rail corridors and improve access to underserved rural communities.

“The Plateau State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Railway Corporation to restore and operate the Jos–Kuru rail corridor.
