NSC backs Junior D’Tigress for U-19 World Cup campaign

Nigeria’s U-19 women’s basketball team, Junior D’Tigress, have arrived in Brno, Czech Republic, ahead of the FIBA U-19 Women’s World Cup, with full backing from the National Sports Commission (NSC).

The team is placed in Group B alongside China, Canada, and Portugal. They will begin their campaign on Saturday, July 12, against China, followed by matches against Canada on Sunday, July 13, and Portugal on Tuesday, July 15.

In a statement, the Director General of the NSC, Honourable Bukola Olopade, expressed confidence in the team’s potential and reaffirmed the Commission’s support.

“This is more than just a tournament—it’s a statement of belief in the future of Nigerian sports,” he said. “Our girls are carrying the hopes of a proud nation. The NSC stands fully behind them.”

Led by Head Coach Faustina Akhere Juliana and assistant coaches Nyingifa Atonye and Usuwa Chinedu Stone, the team is said to be focused and well-prepared for the competition.

A total of 16 countries will compete at the 16th edition of the FIBA U-19 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to run from July 12 to 20 in the city of Brno.

Junior D’Tigress aim to make a strong impression and advance beyond the group stage as they represent Nigeria on the global stage.
