NSC celebrates 29 years of Nigeria’s historic Olympic gold at Atlanta ’96

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has celebrated the 29th anniversary of Nigeria’s historic gold medal win in men’s football at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics — a landmark moment that made Nigeria the first African nation to achieve the feat.

On August 3, 1996, the Olympic Eagles, captained by the legendary Nwankwo Kanu, stunned a star-studded Argentina side with a dramatic 3-2 victory in the final at the Sanford Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Nigeria’s journey to glory was marked by grit and brilliance. The team came from behind to beat Brazil 4-3 in a thrilling semi-final before overcoming Argentina in the final — victories that cemented Nigeria’s place in global football history.

“This was a moment that redefined African football,” said Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the NSC. “Today, we celebrate these icons from the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, who brought glory to Nigeria and inspired an entire continent.”

Also at the Games, Chioma Ajunwa made history by winning gold in the women’s long jump with a leap of 7.12 meters. She became the first Black African woman to win Olympic gold in a field event — a milestone that continues to inspire athletes across Africa.

Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, described Atlanta ’96 as a defining chapter in Nigeria’s sporting legacy. “Chioma Ajunwa and our football heroes gave us memories that still ignite national pride,” he said.

Coincidentally, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team is set to face Mali later today in the AfroBasket final — a match many hope will revive the spirit of Atlanta ’96 with another golden finish.

The NSC commended the heroes of 1996 for lifting Nigeria and Africa onto the world stage and urged young athletes to draw inspiration from their achievements as they strive for future success.
