The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, has fulfilled a personal pledge of ₦10 million to the Super Eagles B team following their resounding 3-1 victory over Ghana’s Black Galaxies in Uyo.
The win secured Nigeria’s spot at the 8th African Nations Championship (CHAN) slated for February 2025.
The pledge, made before the decisive match, was initially announced by the NSC Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who had intended to personally reward the team for their performance.
However, Mallam Dikko stepped in, choosing to take up the gesture himself as a show of solidarity and appreciation for the team.
Explaining the gesture, Hon. Olopade said: “Before the game, I made a personal pledge to reward the team if they emerged victorious. When I shared this with the NSC chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, he immediately applauded the idea but insisted on making the donation himself as a sign of solidarity and appreciation for the players’ efforts.”
He added: “It was a heartfelt moment that truly shows his passion for Nigerian football and the athletes who represent our country. His generosity has further inspired the team, and we are incredibly grateful for his leadership.”
The Super Eagles B delivered an electrifying performance at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. Sodiq Ismaila opened the scoring in the 18th minute, followed by goals from Nduka Junior and Saviour Isaac in the 21st and 25th minutes, respectively.
Although Ghana’s Stephen Amenkona scored a consolation goal in the 71st minute, the Nigerian team maintained their dominance to secure a well-deserved victory.
The 2025 CHAN tournament, exclusively featuring players competing in domestic leagues across Africa, will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from February 1 to 28.
