National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko celebrated Nigeria’s scrabble team on Friday, honoring their remarkable triumph at the African Scrabble Championship in Kigali, Rwanda.
As a gesture of appreciation for their dedication and hard work, Dikko awarded the team a personal gift of N2 million.
Leading the charge, 24-year-old Oluwatimilehin Doko captured the title in the 15th African Scrabble Championship, marking a significant achievement in Nigerian scrabble history. Doko now joins the ranks of 12 other Nigerians who have claimed this prestigious title in previous championships.
At the event, Dikko shared his vision for cultivating a culture of long-term planning within Nigerian sports, aiming to establish a solid foundation for lasting success.
“Your success validates our approach of focusing on domestic development before aiming for trophies. Hard work brings rewards, and when you do things the right way, you see results,” he stated.
He also commended the scrabble team’s commitment to a rigorous competitive schedule, noting that regular participation in national tournaments helps keep athletes prepared and competitive.
Looking to the future, Dikko emphasized the importance of strategic planning, urging sports federations to submit their yearly programs to the NSC at the beginning of each new calendar year.
“This early submission will enable us to plan effectively, support tournaments, and track progress,” he explained.
With this continued support and a strong focus on strategic planning, Dikko envisions a promising future for Nigerian sports on both the domestic and international stages.
