NSC pledges full support for teenage tennis star Khadijat Mohammed

In line with its “catch-them-young” initiative, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has pledged support for 15-year-old tennis sensation Khadijat Eleojo Mohammed.
Khadijat, the first West or Central African player to win the ITF J30 World Tour, made history by clinching the Dala Tennis title at 14 and successfully defending it this year.
Despite her achievements, the financial demands of professional tennis pose a significant challenge to her progress. Her father and coach, Mohammed Ohinoyi, a certified ITF coach and former professional player, appealed to the NSC for support, citing limited personal resources.
NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko assured that the Commission would help Khadijat realize her full potential.
“Your achievements at this age show immense promise. We will ensure you receive the necessary support to succeed,” Dikko stated.
He highlighted plans to include Khadijat in the NSC’s Adopt-an-Athlete program, which partners with companies to sponsor athletes. Dikko expressed hope of seeing her represent Nigeria at the Olympics, saying, “With the right training, you could compete on the Olympic stage within a few years.”
Dikko also emphasized grassroots development, aligning the NSC’s efforts with the Nigeria Tennis Federation to ensure comprehensive support for Khadijat’s journey.
He warned against representing another country after receiving national backing, urging loyalty to Nigeria.
The NSC assigned an aide, Musa Amadu, to oversee Khadijat’s progress and ensure consistent follow-up.
Amadu stressed the importance of securing proper funding and possibly enrolling her in an international tennis academy for advanced training and competition exposure.
Khadijat expressed gratitude, stating, “If I’m supported, I’ll use my success to inspire and help other young players in Nigeria.” Her father added, “We’ve done our best; now, it’s up to the NSC to take her further.”
