NSE applauds Tinubu’s approval of Nigeria-first procurement policy

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for approving the Renewed Hope Nigeria-First Procurement Policy, describing it as a transformative step toward strengthening the nation’s economy through local content promotion.
The policy, recently announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, mandates all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to prioritize Nigerian goods, services, and expertise in all government procurement processes. It aims to empower domestic industries, reduce dependence on imports, and promote economic self-reliance.
In a statement signed by its President and Chairman-in-Council, Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala, FNSE, the NSE lauded the provision requiring the procurement of local alternatives, with waivers to be granted by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) only when no viable local option exists.
“This policy is a game-changer for local manufacturing, skills development, and technology transfer. It will contribute significantly to economic growth and job creation,” Oguntala said.
The NSE also expressed strong support for the policy and pledged to collaborate with the government to ensure its successful implementation. The Society offered its expertise in policy monitoring, technical advisory, and professional insight.
“We believe that this policy will foster innovation, strengthen Nigeria’s engineering sector, and create sustainable development opportunities for the nation,” she added.
The NSE further called for the prompt issuance of an Executive Order to establish a legal framework for the policy’s enforcement, ensuring its smooth execution across all MDAs.
