NUJ demands justice for slain journalist in Ibadan

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has called on the state police command to identify and prosecute those behind the killing of its member, Ojo Peter.

The demand was contained in a statement signed by the union’s Acting Chairman, Olusola Oladapo, and made available to newsmen on Tuesday night.

Peter, a former reporter with Parrot Extra and Daily Monitor, was shot dead during a daylight robbery on August 18 along the Molete–Oke Ado axis of Ibadan. The incident, which occurred around 2 p.m., has unsettled members of the media community in the state.

According to reports, the journalist was attacked by armed robbers who dispossessed him of his bag. Despite pleading with them that it contained no money, he was shot in the back.

In the statement, Oladapo urged the police to unravel the circumstances surrounding Peter’s death and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

“The union is saddened by the news of Ojo Peter’s killing in Ibadan by suspected armed robbers,” the statement read. “We urge the Oyo State Police Command to fish out the killers of the deceased journalist.”
