NULGE backs Oyebanji’s re-election bid

The national leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees has thrown its weight behind the reelection bid of Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji.

NULGE President General, Aliyu Kankara, said the support was based on Oyebanji’s consistent support and unwavering commitment to the welfare of local government workers and pensioners in Ekiti State.

Kankara spoke in a letter to the governor with reference number NULGE/01/Vol V/117 dated 11th June 2025, titled “Appreciation message,” made available in Ado Ekiti on Sunday.

He lauded Oyebanji for his consistent work in fulfilling his “campaign promises, thereby improving the lives of the residents of Ekiti State by providing socio-economic infrastructure across the length and breadth of the state.”

The NULGE president-general said the Ekiti State leadership of the union always spoke highly of Oyebanji’s commitment to improving LG workers’ working conditions and welfare.

“Your (Oyebanji) administration’s prioritisation of workers’ welfare has set a commendable standard for other states to emulate. As the gubernatorial election approaches, we stand behind you and celebrate the positive impacts you have made on the lives of our members and the local government service through intentional institution reforms,” the letter read.

Kankara described Oyebanji as “an exceptional leader and a shining example among governors in Nigeria.”

He said, “l am writing to convey my sincere appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to you on behalf of workers in the 774 local governments in Nigeria as well as express our deep gratitude for your consistent support and unwavering commitment to the welfare of Local Government workers in Ekiti State.Your recent approval of an additional N100m for the Local Government Staff Loans Board, in addition to the prior recapitalisation of N200m, reflects your dedication to empowering the staff thus providing them with the necessary resources to fulfil their aspirations of owning cars and building houses of their own.

“It is gratifying to acknowledge the efforts you are making in touching the lives of pensioners through the allocation of more funds for gratuity payments. We are particularly grateful for your resolution of the longstanding issue of CONHESS and COMHESS and the payment of 100 per cent arrears in the health sector. This, no doubt, has provided the much-needed relief to our members in that sector after 13 years of agitation,” the letter read.
