NYSC reforms most consequential since establishment in 1973 — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has announced a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), describing the changes as the most significant overhaul of the scheme since its establishment in 1973.

The President made the announcement on Wednesday in a post on his X account, following the Federal Executive Council’s approval of the reforms at its meeting on Monday.

Tinubu said the reforms are designed to transform the NYSC from a mobilisation programme into a national development platform focused on skills acquisition, employability, entrepreneurship and productivity.

“On Monday, at the Federal Executive Council, our administration approved the most consequential reforms of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme since its establishment in 1973,” he said.

According to the President, the reforms are part of his administration’s commitment to creating opportunities for young Nigerians.

“On the day I was sworn in as your President, I promised to create meaningful opportunities for our young people. I said women and youth would feature prominently in our administration, and this reform is partly the actualisation of that promise,” Tinubu stated.

While reaffirming the NYSC’s role in promoting national unity, Tinubu said the programme must evolve to meet present-day realities.

“For 53 years, the NYSC has served the cause of national unity. That mission remains important and must be preserved. But the Nigeria of today demands more,” he said.
