Oba Ladoja charges newly promoted chiefs to embrace service over glamour

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has urged newly promoted chiefs to regard their elevation as a responsibility to serve the people rather than an avenue for displaying wealth or glamour.

The monarch gave the advice on Friday during the promotion ceremony of seven senior chiefs in the Otun Olubadan line, held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Addressing the gathering, which featured dignitaries from various sectors, Oba Ladoja said the traditional institution has evolved, stressing that royalty is now defined by contributions to community development.

He noted that the era when chieftaincy titles were associated with pomp and pageantry has ended, adding that modern royalty requires compassion, sacrifice, and a commitment to improving the lives of the less privileged.

“Now, royalty is about what you have to offer your community. It is about ministering to the needs of the indigent in our midst. It is about ameliorating the condition of our people,” the Olubadan said.

Oba Ladoja expressed confidence in the newly promoted chiefs, describing them as individuals of influence and capacity who are well-positioned to make a positive impact across Ibadanland.

Those promoted include veteran journalist Oloye Lekan Alabi, who became the Abese Olubadan; Senior Chief Ismaila Akinade Fijabi, the new Maye Olubadan; and Senior Chief Saka Fola Lapade, elevated as the Ekefa Olubadan.

Others are former Senate Leader Teslim Folarin, now Agbaakin Olubadan; Senior Chief Muibi Ademola Adewuyi, Aare Alaasa Olubadan; Senior Chief Raufu Delesolu, the new Ikolaba Olubadan; and Senior Chief Hammed Lanihun, who now serves as the Asaaju Olubadan.
